Why Your Body Might Be Stuck (And What the Nervous System Has to Do With It)

You've probably been there. You've had a knot in your shoulder or a catch in your lower back for months. You stretch. You rest. Maybe you even go get a massage where someone works deep into the tissue and beats you up for an hour. But the pain keeps coming back.

The problem might not just be tight muscles. The problem could also be your nervous system. And if that's the case, no amount of stretching or deep pressure alone is going to fix it.

The wellness world is talking a lot right now about "nervous system fitness." But in the treatment room, it comes down to a very practical reality. Pain is the body trying to protect you. If your nervous system feels threatened, your body tends to lock down.

What the Nervous System Has to Do With Pain

To understand why pain sticks around, you have to understand what the nervous system is actually doing. It acts as your body's alarm system. It monitors for threat and sends pain signals as a warning. But that signal isn't always a direct measure of tissue damage.

When your nervous system has been on high alert for a long time—from an old injury, chronic stress, or pushing through pain for months—it can become overly sensitive. This is a concept called central sensitization. The alarm system gets stuck in the "on" position. Small signals get amplified. The alarm keeps going off even when the original threat is gone.

This is why some people feel significant pain without a clear structural cause, and why others with visible damage on an MRI feel very little pain at all. The nervous system is interpreting the signal, not just passing it along.

The Protection Mechanism

When the nervous system perceives a threat, it tends to respond by tightening the surrounding muscles to guard and protect the area.

This is a smart, adaptive response. The body is trying to protect you. The problem is that when this protection stays on too long, the muscles stay locked. Your range of motion decreases. And the pain cycle can keep feeding itself.

If a therapist pushes hard into a muscle that is in protection mode, the nervous system often tightens further rather than releasing. The body thinks it is under attack again. Pressure without listening to the body's response is just force.

The Pain Scale, Breath, and Working With the Body

This is exactly why the pain scale matters in treatment. I don't try to push past a 6 or 7 on the pain scale. Staying below that threshold gives the nervous system room to feel safe enough to let go.

Think about what happens when someone tickles you. Your body braces, tightens, and pulls away to protect itself. If treatment causes too much pain, the nervous system does the exact same thing. The body has to feel safe before it will release.

Breath is one of the most direct tools we have for communicating with the nervous system. A slow exhale activates the parasympathetic system—the "rest and recover" state. That is exactly what needs to happen for tissue to release and for the body to stop guarding.

What Nervous System Fitness Actually Looks Like

"Nervous system fitness" isn't a mystical concept. It's about consistently giving the body the conditions it needs to down-regulate and recover.

It looks like practical self-care. It means getting quality sleep, staying hydrated, and paying attention to your breathing. It means reducing chronic stressors where you can. It also includes using recovery tools like red light therapy or PEMF that support the body's ability to shift out of a high-alert state.

The goal isn't to eliminate the alarm system. You need that alarm system to survive. The goal is to help the body recognize when the threat has passed so it can stop guarding.

Moving Forward

Pain that keeps coming back might not be a structural problem alone. It could also be a nervous system that hasn't had the chance to reset.

Understanding why the body guards itself is the first step toward working with it instead of against it. A lot of people assume the pain is just part of getting older. I hear it in the treatment room all the time. My honest response is usually — that's not necessarily the whole story. The research shows the body can still adapt and recover at any age. It may take longer, and it does require the right approach, but the body is still capable of more than most people give it credit for.
